It is a beautiful, perfect selfie photo-op kind of day. You whip out your phone only to realise that your “Instagram face” game is not quite up to the mark.
“Instagram face”? Yes, there is such a thing!
What is an “Instagram face”?
Essentially it means you ought to look selfie ready all the time with perfect yet natural looking makeup, not a hair out of place, glowy dewy skin with a hint of blush, delicately constructed eyebrows, matte and plump lips on a heavily contoured and highlighted face. If images of Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian come to mind then you’re spot on. To achieve an “Instagram face”, people either turn to the best filter and photo-editing app they can lay their hands on or they turn to doctors for help. But why the obsession with Instagram?
Instagram is perhaps the most utilised form of social media platform no doubt due to its ease of use, reach, and many other reasons including keeping up with trends. Having an “Instagram face” could get you more exposure and with it come opportunities that can present themselves in terms of dollars (and loads of dollars at that).
You could end up on the cover of your favorite fashion magazine or be the next face of an international brand – the list of opportunities goes on. But most of the time, people just want to be “liked” and be perceived as popular. The more likes received, the higher a person’s confidence level. Our self esteem and mental well being can take a hit if we start to rate our self-worth based on the number of likes on our Instagram posts.
Social acceptance and personal fulfilment
In today’s age of heavy social media usage and influence, the pressure to be “selfie-ready” has increased exponentially. We are social creatures after all and interaction with others is necessary, regardless of how small or large that need is.
When it comes to personal image, the underlying reasons and concerns remain the same. Dr. Pamela Rutledge, a psychologist offered this thought: “Now, of course, there are many more images of real people on the Internet than supermodels, yet the concerns over body image remain the same.”
Just be a confident you!
Plastic surgeons and aesthetic doctors can fill in the gaps that nature didn’t provide. Nose, lip, and cheek fillers can give you a higher nose bridge without the need for contouring brushes and makeup, fuller and sexier lips to pout with, and full, youthful cheeks. Botulinum neuromodulators not only give you a youthful look by smoothening those frown lines and wrinkles, it helps shape a slimmer jaw and when combined with a chin filler, gives you a v-shaped face.
“It is good to want to improve your looks but what is beauty if you don’t make a good impression or if you are not confident?” says Dr. Terence Tan of Halley Medical Aesthetics. “Confidence is something that no medical aesthetic doctor can give you. Nothing is more important and nothing looks better than having a woman who is confident.”
So don’t go chasing that “Instagram face”. Be a version of yourself that you are happy with and with confidence, the world will be your oyster.
