Are Facial Oil Blotting Sheets Good For You?

If you live in a country or region known for its high humidity, chances are you will be familiar with one of its side effects – excessively oily skin. Causes for this beauty bane include stress, medication and for some, certain skincare products.

Oil blotting sheets are widely used to help manage the situation. While many may swear by their usefulness, they are actually bad for skin.

Here’s why.

 

It’s a matte skin quick fix. Not!

 

Most women with oily skin feel that they could do with a more matte appearance. Resorting to oil blotting sheets as a quick fix does not solve the issue. It achieves the matte look by stripping our skin of oil which, ironically, is a bad thing to do for our skin! Our skin needs a little oil because, among many other benefits, oil helps prevent water loss and keeps skin moisturised. When skin is dehydrated, wrinkles and other signs of premature ageing will make their unwelcome appearance.

When the oil is removed from the skin, it prompts our skin to produce even more to compensate for the loss. This often leads to issues such as acne and clogged pores. So oil blotting sheets are more of a “quick unfix” than what it’s purported to be.

 

How about powdered oil blotting sheets ?

 

Powdered facial blotters do give a nice finish on the outside, but they are equally damaging on the inside. The powder clogs up pores, potentially causing more harm and problems to the skin. Some of the excess oil and grime may be absorbed by the sheet, but the rest of the dirt gets pushed back into the skin. This creates an environment for the Propionibacterium acne (P. acne) bacteria to thrive and you will end up with breakouts and an even oilier skin!

 

Effective oil control alternative

Just because oil blotting sheets and powdered facial blotters don’t work doesn’t mean you should drown in oily sorrow. It is still necessary to maintain good skincare habits supplemented by the use of effective skincare products.
