I Need Help With My Big PORES-blem

We hate big pores. They are ugly. They make our face look rough and old. Why do we have pores, and how did they get so big! The truth is, small as they seem compared to other body parts, they play a big role in our wellbeing.

“Pores are a natural component of our skin,” says Dr. Terence Tan, Director of Halley Medical Aesthetics. “They are necessary for temperature regulation, preventing dehydration, immunity, and maintenance of the body’s natural ionic balance.” Dr. Tan also explained that the appearance of large pores is the result of a myriad of factors.

Here are the top five factors to large pore size:

#1: Gender
Gender is the biggest contributor to pore size followed by age and oily skin. Men have genetically bigger pores, which contribute to the courser, more masculine look in men.

#2: Your age
Poor skin quality due to aging is a big contributor to large pores as the size of pore openings are highly dependent on the quality of supporting skin. Loss of skin elasticity leads to tired skin and flabby pores.

#3: Oily skin
Oily skin contributes to large pore openings as excessive oil production leads to a build-up of grime at the pore openings. This results in larger pores and eventually black heads and white heads over time.

#4: Sun exposure
Photoaging (poor skin quality due to sun exposure over time) robs the skin of collagen leading to inelastic skin and the appearance of larger pores.

#5: Lifestyle factors
Lifestyle does play a role. Factors like high-sugar diets, stress, sweat, and smoke and pollution contribute to the build up of debris and dirt within the pores through increased sebum production and blockage of pores.

Now that you know what contributes to big pores, how can we treat them? Dr. Tan will reveal his tips in the second part of the story so wait for it! In the mean time, check out some of Halley Medical Aesthetics’ pore-related treatments:
