Forget Dermaplaning. Get That Natural Glow Safely

There are safer and better ways of removing unwanted hair and exfoliating the face other than dermaplaning for a smoother, brighter, and glowing face.

The thought of running a sharp blade like a scalpel over your face for beauty reasons sounds dangerous. But many women are reportedly doing this facial-shaving treatment, known as dermaplaning, as a way of making skin glow. Rumors have it that legendary beauty icons like Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, and Cleopatra used dermaplaning as a way to exfoliate facial skin and smoothen it.

“It sounds mighty dangerous even in trained hands. There are so many options that are much safer and proven to be effective,” says Dr. Terence Tan, Director of Halley Medical Aesthetics, when asked about this method of exfoliating the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin) and removing vellus hairs (fine baby hairs on the face) in order to brighten the complexion.

So he recommends that if the objective is to shave, use a shaver not a scalpel. “If you want a hair removal option that is permanent, then consider dynamic pulsed light or laser hair removal,” he adds.

If the objective is to exfoliate the skin and brighten the face, there are many options to choose from. “For skincare, there are exfoliating scrubs and skin renewal agents like retinoids,” says Dr. Tan. Ladies can also go to trained practitioners for a mild chemical peel or no downtime microdermabrasion treatment for better results.

“If you want a very precise and deeper exfoliation, there is the fractional CO2 laser treatment. Or for a precise and superficial exfoliation, there is the laser carbon peel treatment.

“There are so many options. Why do you want to use a sharp blade for exfoliation?” he says.

Yes, why indeed?

Our Beauty Glossary:
Fractional laser skin resurfacing
Our skin has the ability to replace dead skin cells with new ones and this helps to maintain youthful-looking skin. However, as we age, the skin’s capacity for self-renewal diminishes drastically. Sometimes, we need a little boost in the skin renewal department and the fractional laser skin resurfacing treatment is an answer. During fractional laser skin resurfacing, carbon dioxide (CO2) lasers target the water within the skin cells, removing the old layer of skin to reveal new, fresh skin.

Conventional CO2 lasers have a downtime of two weeks or more due to the peeling off of skin. However, we use a new and improved version known as the fractional CO2 laser. The fractional CO2 laser uses computer-generated, pixelated, and electronically-generated grids to target small microscopic areas over the face (20%-40% of surface area). The unaffected areas help to heal the affected areas, reducing the downtime from two weeks to five days.

Hair Removal
Hair be gone! We can get rid of the fuzz on your underarms, forearms, legs, *ahem* areas below the belt, or anywhere else with laser and dynamic pulsed light (DPL) technology. We give you two hair-removal options because everyone has different needs:
– DPL Smooth Hair Removal
– Laser Clear Hair Removal

Laser carbon peel
The overflow of oil causes pores to become clogged. If there are also dead skin cells trapped in the oil, the result is the creation of bacteria that causes an acne pustule. Our laser carbon peel addresses acne problems and the issue of clogged pores. As the treatment name suggests, a thin layer of carbon is applied on the face. The laser will be used to create a peeling effect to remove the carbon. This process will help to purge and minimise skin pores, exfoliate the skin, and stimulate the production of collagen and new skin cells.

No downtime glycolic acid peel
We need to say bye bye to dead skin cells on our face before we can say hello to the fresh, smooth, and new skin underneath! Exfoliating is essential as it helps to resurface the skin by removing old skin cells and refining the skin’s texture, giving it a soft, supple look. Our gentle peel does just that plus there is zero downtime unlike many other acid peels. During the next few days, old skin cells, which are no longer needed or viable, are removed, revealing new, brighter, baby soft skin with smaller pores and less wrinkles.
