Dr. Mark Lim of Halley Medical Aesthetics shares his thoughts on what you should take note of when doing your research for a filler treatment in Singapore.
We are certainly spoilt for choice when it comes to having fillers done in Singapore. Sometimes having too many options makes it difficult for patients to decide which doctor or clinic to go to. I hope my answers to the common patient concerns will guide you in your research for a filler treatment in Singapore.
Back to basics
There are various brands of fillers, which are classified into two types – hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers and non-HA or collagen-stimulating fillers. HA fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and Belotero fill up the area by itself whereas collagen-stimulating fillers, such as Sculptra, stimulates the body into generating collagen for volumisation.
How do I know I need fillers and not any other facial rejuvenating treatments?
Apart from facial rejuvenation by restoring volume in deflated ageing areas and by a lifting effect, fillers can also be used to augment and beautify facial features. You may also choose to do facial rejuvenating treatments to complement and optimise your dermal filler treatment.
I would advise a proper consultation and assessment with a doctor you trust to address your personal concerns before considering your options.
How do I know which type or brand of filler is suitable for me?
What many people may not be aware of is that fillers also have different levels of firmness and viscosity. Whether you need a filler that is firmer or softer will depend on the area that requires treatment, the condition of your skin, and the desired result.
It is therefore important to let your doctor know your expectations and your concerns, so that he can prescribe the most appropriate type of filler – be it a HA or collagen-stimulating filler – to achieve your desired result.
How do you decide this doctor is for you?
The experience and technique of the doctor are even more important than the filler product or the brand itself. I feel it is essential for a doctor to thoroughly evaluate your needs and concerns in order to tailor an appropriate treatment strategy. You may also wish to enquire on before and after photos to help you better understand what to expect.
Lastly, choose someone you are comfortable with because filler treatments are not just a single visit, but a journey involving follow up and aftercare.
I am afraid of looking unnatural. How do doctors decide how much filler to inject?
Looking unnatural is commonly the consequence of techniques such as using too much filler in a single area or using a suboptimal choice of filler and not just the total amount of filler used. I usually consider the severity of ageing and volume loss as well as the desired patient outcome. Some doctors may choose to break down your filler treatment into stages to proceed at a pace you are more comfortable with.
What is considered a good filler treatment?
A good filler treatment result should be natural. It should rejuvenate and give you a fresh, youthful look. People around you should notice the glow and confidence on your face, not the filler that your doctor has recently injected.
