When it comes treating saggy skin, Dr. Terence Tan, Director of Halley Medical Aesthetics has a “sandwich” technique developed based on his knowledge of medical aesthetic therapies for rejuvenation and our skin’s ageing process.
“This sandwich technique is a double-down strategy designed to target two key issues that occur in the face when we age,” says. Dr. Terence Tan. The first is the loss of volume which results in the second problem, loose or saggy skin. This is because the scaffold that was holding up the skin is now gone, he explains.
“To tackle both problems at the same time, I would use dermal fillers to first lift the skin from underneath, giving it volume. Then I will ‘layer’ the filler with Ultherapy. Ultherapy gives additional volume to the skin, firmimg and tightening it further to reduce saggy skin and wrinkles,” adds Dr. Terence Tan. He coined this layering technique a “sandwich technique” because it is similar to how we would make sandwiches by layering one ingredient on top of another.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are made of various kinds of safe ingredients that have been developed for injection into the skin. Many filler brands like Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Belotero contain hyaluronic acid, which is a natural compound found in our body that helps to hydrate and add volume to our skin. Dermal fillers are designed for injection into the skin to plump it up and create a fuller and more youthful facade. They are also used to contour and sculpt the face to give more shape and definition to our facial features.
There are also other types of safe and effective non-hyaluronic fillers, such as Sculptra®, Radiesse®, and Ellanse®that stimulate the production of collagen. If you prefer fillers with natural ingredients, Algeness®is an option as it is made from purified agarose gel (polysaccharide), which is derived from the purification of agar-agar processed from red algae.
What is Ultherapy?
Ultherapy® uses micro-focused ultrasound energy to stimulate the growth of fresh, new collagen. The result is a tightening and gradual lifting of the skin back to its youthful position. It allows doctors to target the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) layer, which is the layer of skin that is responsible for collagen production. Before Ultherapy, this layer is only accessible during a surgical facelift, which is not ideal due to the downtime and pain involved.
To ensure optimal results of patient’s Ultherapy treatment, Halley Medical Aesthetics (Halley) follows the Amplify Protocol. This protocol advocates that doctors deliver 800 lines or shots of micro-focused ultrasound energy for an effective, long-lasting full-face and upper neck lift.
With so many therapies available, you can be sure to find something that suits your needs. Please consult the doctors to find out which treatment combination is most suitable for your skin.
